A collaborative print by Frank Gonzales, Bria Thompson, and Benjamin Selby
2021 / Serigraphy and Inkjet / 16” x 20”
This collaboration was a long time in the making. Right before the world shut down, at the end of 2019, Frank and a group of ASU students and professors began discussing making a collaborative print, but as everything else from that time, it had to be put on the backburner. As things began to settle down and we started to see some normalcy again, this new collaborative project could not have come at a better time. Coming out of such secluded times everyone was looking forward to opportunities to work together again and this project just fell into place.
We wanted to approach this project as a true collaboration, using everyone’s skills to the fullest. Initially we talked through some ideas and had Frank come up with a key drawing. Next, we worked back and forth creating color layers. As a photographer, Bria had the technical skills and access to high quality printers, so we printed out base colors using inkjet. After laying down inkjet as a foundation, we built up the color layers using screen printing under the guidance of Ben. There are about twelve screen printed layers, plus the final key layer. Finally, after over two years in the making, it is almost a strange feeling to have finally wrapped this project up. After many postponements and setbacks, we are thrilled with how the project turned out!
